August 31, 2011: The Warriors kicked off their second season in the LA Municipal 30+ League with a well-fought win over cross-town rivals Hollywood United Tuesday night at Griffith Park.
Sporting four new additions to the side -- striker Pep Lupo and defenders Mike Gemballa, Alvaro Ramirez and Cruz Roque -- Apache FC got off to a quick start with attacking midfielder Richie Million hammering home a Nick Midulla pass at the nine-minute mark. Six minutes later, Lupo doubled that tally slotting in the pass through off a Midulla free kick outside the box. United countered on 20 minutes after some miscommunication in the Warriors box ... but winger Ivan Miller quickly restored the two-goal lead five minutes later, knocking a bouncing shot past the HU keeper.
The second half saw the two teams trade off single goals with Lupo completing his brace at 65 minutes on a breakaway, looped forward by Midulla, and United striking with about 15 minutes left in the game. But cool heads and some nice one-touch passing allowed Apache to maintain control of the match, which at times got more than a little chippy.
Captain Alex Martinez and Million were both yellow-carded on two separate incidents, while a United striker was red-carded for his questionable tackles as the game wound to a close. Apache keeper JC Salinaszelaya accorded himself admirably throughout the game, allowing few chances off any direct shots on goal.
Next week the Warriors will tackle a tough Martin Fierro side, also at Griffith Park with an 8:50 PM start.
