The Warriors will kick off the New Year in style, competing in the over-30s 2012 City of L.A. Municipal Sports Invitational Double Elimination Soccer Tournament.
The over-30s division will feature 10 teams, and a minimum of two matches ... two losses and a squad is eliminated.
Apache FC's first game will be 7 PM, Monday, Jan. 9 at Griffith Park, against Silverlake FC. A win will see the Warriors advance to Round 2 against Glendale United, Jan. 11 (Griffith Park, 7 PM), while a loss will drop the squad into the losers bracket for an 8:50 PM match Jan. 17 against the loser of Game 4 (Dinamo Lokomotiv vs FC Armenia Deportivo). Games which are tied at the end of 90 minutes will go straight to PKs to determine a winner.
Apache FC's roster is all yet-to-be-finalized but will include the team's first season allstar -- Carlos Guerrero -- between the posts, as well as a couple new prospects.
Stay tuned for more tournament details and announcements about upcoming training sessions. Until then, stay fit.

Warriors end second season looking to regroup
Apache FC ended its second LA Municipal League +30 season Tuesday at John Ferraro still plagued by players dropouts, no-shows and injuries. A nine-man squad, reduced to eight after another player injury, gave a spirited effort against Los Andes and held them to a 3-0 result thanks to a core group which never lost hope.
Ivan Miller was stellar between the posts, keeping the game respectable, while Nick Midulla and Richard Taylor kept pushing for a goal, even after the Warriors were down 2-0 at the half. Others who battled to the end included Mike Gemballa, Bryan Moore, Cruz Roque, Rahoul Ghose, Mike Lewis and Esteban Zelaya, who was forced off midway through the first half with a minor calf tear.
Pep Lupo, who has been out with an injury for several games also cheered on from the sidelines together with Warriors mainstay Tara Tortorello.
The latter half of the season, which saw many such undermanned games, will force team organizers to go on a recruiting journey in the coming weeks, which will hopefully see some more consistency in the Warriors lineup. Players who consistently made it out for games will be invited back.
The squad, who will be playing some friendlies later this month to keep returning members fit and to try out several new prospects, will hopefully be one of the 10 squads playing in the +30 LA Muni League double knock-out tourney this January. First-come sign up starts Dec. 7.

Warriors playoff hopes fall with 5-0 Hollywood United loss
It started well with Apache FC playing a passing game on the ground and generating several goal-scoring opportunities in the first 15 minutes in the squad's rematch with Hollywood United Tuesday night at Griffith Park.
But two set plays -- corner kicks and headers resulting in goals at 6' and 20'-- put Apache back on their heels. By halftime United was up 3-0. The Warriors battled back in the second half but let in two more late goals despite some strong goaltending by keeper JC Salinaszelaya, who even saved a penalty kick in the dying stages of the match.
The squad put in a strong effort, but the goals just didn't come. The Warriors play division leaders Martin Fierro next Tuesday at John Ferraro 7 with a 7 PM kickoff. Their earlier season match was a tight game, with MF narrowly taking the game 2-1.

Hollywood United rematch could be turning point
Apache FC face Hollywood United for a second time this season ... and a win is a must if the Warriors are to mount any sort of challenge for the top two playoff qualifying spots this season.
The team's record of 1 win, 1 tie and three losses at the mid-season sees them tied with FC Armenia Deportivo for fifth spot -- ahead only on goal differential -- and two points behind United.
Late game collapses have resulted in close losses to Martin Fierro (2-1) and Armenia (2-0), a 5-3 loss to Goalfellas and a 2-2 tie with Los Andes this season. Apache's lone win came in the season opener against Hollywood United ... 4-2.
A win tonight could vault the Warriors past United and possibly Los Andes -- who face league leaders Martin Fierro ... into third place.
Come out and cheer the squad on ... the match kicks off at 8:50 PM at the Griffith Park turf field.

WARRIORS SETTLE FOR LOS ANDES DRAW
In what could be described as a war at times, with John Ferraro 7 sporting its usual dust clouds and absence of anything green (yes grass is green) -- Apache FC took on their nemesis from last season -- Los Andes, the squad that knocked the Warriors out of the spring playoffs.
The game, which got serious very quickly, saw the Warriors go up 2-0 in the first half off a pair of goals from Pep Lupo (6', 30'), one off a PK after Lupo was hauled down in the box. The match saw the return of Alex Martinez after a one game suspension, Mike Barthel (in his first game of the season), and Sammy Xaylitdet, who played a strong 90 minutes in the sweeper role after missing last week's game against GOALFELLAS. Play was rough and chippy at times, but cooler heads prevailed for the first 45.
The same could not be said for the second half when frustration boiled over on both sides. Apache defender Cruz Roque was red carded after retaliating against a Los Andes player who elbowed him (yes the refs missed the initial call ... one thing that was consistent in the game). Not satisfied with that, the Los Andes player then cleated Roque while trying to retrieve the ball from the sidelines ... and all hell broke loose with both squads squaring up. Said player was finally red carded and forced to leave the field. Unfortunately the controversy created enough confusion in what had been a strong defensive effort by the Warriors, allowing Los Andes to slip in two goals before the final whistle ... and leaving the score tied at two.
Only the two top squads qualify for the playoff round, so the Warriors will have to turn the positives from this match -- a gutsy performance and some quality goals -- into a string of wins in the second half of the LA Muni season.
Apache FC face Hollywood United for the second time this season next week at Griffith Park (Oct 4 | 8:50 PM kickoff), a team which has also struggled thus far. Come and cheer on the Warriors in their away blues to a win.

Apache FC striker launches website
Warriors striker Nick Midulla recently launched a new website in support of his career as a guitarist, musician and songwriter.
Check out Midulla's site -- which features news, a bio, sound and video clips and a gallery of his vast array of guitars -- at www.nickmidulla.com.
Currently on tour through Colorado, New Mexico, Nevada and Texas with 'Me and Heath', Midulla returns to soccer action for the squad's rematch against Hollywood United, Sept. 4 at Griffith Park.

WARRIORS DROP 5-3 LOSS TO GOALFELLAS
The Warriors snatched defeat from the hands of victory Tuesday night, losing 5-3 to GOALFELLAS after leading the match 3-0 midway through the second half.
On the positive, new signing Sergio Delgadillomunoz capped his first game with a second-half hat-trick.
But the squad fizzled in the final 12 minutes of the match letting in five straight goals to an attacking side which never gave up. Some were defensive errors, some purely a result of a side which never settled into a ball control game to protect their lead, a strategy which pushed a tired back four to contend with half field sprints to chase down GF strikers sent through on the break for most of the game.
The first half saw some luck go the Warriors way with GOALFELLAS missing three clear breakaways, leaving Apache FC rather sullen and quiet at the half-time break. A high defensive line aimed at catching GOALFELLAS offside was only partially successful.
The game-ending breakdown may also have been a result of a lack of subs to replace tired legs as the Warriors had only one.
Hoping to turn around the three-game slide, Apache FC play Los Andes next week at John Ferraro #7 with a 7 PM start. The game will also see the return of midfielder Mike Barthel.

APACHE FC DROP SECOND LOSS
Sept. 14, 2011: Apache FC suffered its second loss of the season against last year's champs, Armenia Deportivo. Although Armenia have a reputation for playing chippy -- based on last year's red card stats, it was a civilized game with the reigning champs dominating most of the first half. AD scored in the first three minutes with a quick set up on a free kick given up right outside the Apache box.
Starting the game with only 10 players and with no "keeper" per se, saw the odds against the Apache squad from the get go. Star midfielder and all around hustler, Ivan Miller stepped into the keeper's role and made many difficult saves. The entire squad played with guts until the arrival of Trix Taylor to even up the numbers.
The second half actually saw the momentum switch to the Apache side, now with a sub after defender Bryan Moore showed up. However after losing a man to a red card, the battle weary Apache side conceded a late goal to make it 2-0.
The Warriors next tackle GOALFELLAS Sept. 20 at John Ferraro 5 with an 8:50 PM start.

APACHE FC LOSE HEARTBREAKER TO CUP FINALISTS
Sept. 7, 2011: Despite outplaying last season's league cup finalists for much of the game, Apache FC went down 2-1 to Martin Fierro last night in a match which was ultimately decided on a missed handball call in the box.
A strong passing side, Martin Fierro went up 1-0 at the 15-minute mark, against the run of play, when a miscommunication between defenders and Apache Keeper JC Salinaszelaya allowed an MF striker too much time on the ball. The striker chipped the ball over the back line into the net.
Apache fought back, creating numerous chances during the remainder of he first half, in what was a physical but fair match-up. Early in the second half the Warriors saw success, with Salinaszelaya earning his first assist as a keeper ... JC lofted the ball far into Martin Fierro territory, where striker Nick Midulla controlled the ball and swept it past a sprawling keeper.
Both sides saw goal chances knocked away. But the telling play came with 5 minutes left to play when an MF striker controlled the ball with his hands in the Apache FC box ... and the side took advantage of the missed call to tally a second, winning goal. Frustrations saw Apache striker Pep Lupo red-carded for retaliating after a harsh tackle ... and a 10-man side tried for the tying goal, but came up short.
Next week the Warriors will tackle league cup winners FC Armenia Deportivo at John Ferraro 6 with an 7 PM start.

APACHE FC KICK SEASON OFF WITH UNITED WIN
August 31, 2011: The Warriors kicked off their second season in the LA Municipal 30+ League with a well-fought win over cross-town rivals Hollywood United Tuesday night at Griffith Park.
Sporting four new additions to the side -- striker Pep Lupo and defenders Mike Gemballa, Alvaro Ramirez and Cruz Roque -- Apache FC got off to a quick start with attacking midfielder Richie Million hammering home a Nick Midulla pass at the nine-minute mark. Six minutes later, Lupo doubled that tally slotting in the pass through off a Midulla free kick outside the box. United countered on 20 minutes after some miscommunication in the Warriors box ... but winger Ivan Miller quickly restored the two-goal lead five minutes later, knocking a bouncing shot past the HU keeper.
The second half saw the two teams trade off single goals with Lupo completing his brace at 65 minutes on a breakaway, looped forward by Midulla, and United striking with about 15 minutes left in the game. But cool heads and some nice one-touch passing allowed Apache to maintain control of the match, which at times got more than a little chippy.
Captain Alex Martinez and Million were both yellow-carded on two separate incidents, while a United striker was red-carded for his questionable tackles as the game wound to a close. Apache keeper JC Salinaszelaya accorded himself admirably throughout the game, allowing few chances off any direct shots on goal.
Next week the Warriors will tackle a tough Martin Fierro side, also at Griffith Park with an 8:50 PM start.

APACHE FC PLACED IN "A" DIVISION WITH TOP SEEDS
August 24, 2011: The Warriors have been bumped up to the Tuesday "A" Division for the Summer/ Fall 2011 LA Municipal Soccer League 30+ season, paired with the likes of Hollywood United, Los Andes, Martin Fierro, FC Armenia Deportivo and GOALFELLAS. All of these squads placed in the top three of their divisions last season, with FC Armenia Deportivo capturing the playoffs cup title. The complete season schedule is now available here.
"B" Division includes: Silverlagos, Silverlake FC, Dinamo Lokamotiv, Altered Glass FC, UFA Kronos and Beercelona.
The top two squads from each division will advance to the playoff round following a regular season of 10 matches.
Apache FC again kick off their season as the home side against Hollywood United, Tuesday, August 30 at Griffith Park with a 7 PM start. The following week they will tackle a tough Martin Fierro side, also at Griffith Park with a 9 PM start.
Coached by Billy Alarcon and Rahoul Ghose, the Warriors will see at least 15 returning players, and several new additions in midfield and defense, shored up -- at least in the early season -- by the goal keeping talents of JC Salinaszelaya. Work commitments have unfortunately kept keeper Carlos Guerrero out of the picture for the coming season.
Returning players include: Nick Midulla, Richard Taylor, Mike Lewis, Richie Million, Ivan Miller, Matthew McCallum, Esteban Zelaya, Juan Salinaszelaya, Rahoul Ghose, Alex Martinez, Bryan Moore, Sammy Xaylitdet, Doug Koontz, Custis Smith and Ger McManus. Joining the lineup so far are defender/midfielders Michael Gemballa, Alvaro Ramirez, Cruz Roque and Pep Lupo. The remaining three spots are yet to be confirmed ... one of which is being held for a full-time keeper. Potential additions are Sergio Delgadillo, Rob Greene and Guillermo Herrera.
Look for this season to be highly competitive and physical as three of the squads joining Div. A had the highest instance of yellow and red cards last season.
Here's to a successful second season.

A World Cup weekend
In the muni off season -- yes I know our LAML cup finals are still to be played this coming Tuesday -- my attention turned to the current World Cup action on ESPN this weekend ... both the Women's World Cup and the Men's U17 have offered some high and extremely low notes over the past few days.
If anyone wants an example of extreme courage, one had to see the U17 semi-final match-up on Friday between host-country Mexico and Germany ... a game which, no matter your allegiances, was one of the best of 2011 for sheer excitement.
After suffering what could have been a game ending head injury when he clashed in mid-air with a German defender twice his size during Jorge Espericueta’s direct goal from a corner kick, Mexican star and Manchester United prospect Julio Gomez returned to the field so bandaged up he looked like he was wearing a turban. Mexico, tied at 2-2 in the late stages of the game, were playing with 10, having already used the last of their substitutes.
Gomez brought the squad back to full strength ... but what could one expect from a player whose cage had been severely rattled? The winning goal, no less -- in the 90th minute, Gomez struck a perfectly executed bicycle kick goal off another corner kick to send Mexico into the finals against Uruguay. Classic football ... while we all play and watch the game.
Then we have the other side of the sport ... the Women's 2011 World Cup, being staged in Germany, has already been plagued but what can only be described as atrocious officiating ... inexplicable calls which have often determined the outcome of important matches ... offsides called, where there were none, legitimate offsides ignored, and numerous highly suspect free kicks awarded as if officials were instructed that they had a quota to meet after being light on carded offenses in the early rounds.
Such was the case in Sunday's quarterfinal match-up between Brazil and the US ... two calls (a retaken PK and an obvious offside) threatened to knock the US women out, but thankfully heart and more than a little karma eventually kicked in.
A completely manufactured Brazilian injury in overtime, as the clock was winding down, was so ludicrous a time-wasting effort it bears looking up on YouTube ... but to describe the incident ... the Brazilian back Erika (13), after a US goal-scoring opportunity was cleared, walked back towards her goal completely fine, then flopped and rolled around like she was dying.
Stretchers came out as she was still writhing in pain ... but even before the med team could clear the corner of the field with her strapped down, she had bounced off the stretcher and proceeded to run (not walk) back to her bench, so she could come back on the field on the next whistle. She was yellow carded for the maneuver ... but really FIFA should have harsher punishments for this sort of behavior which lowers the game ... -10 in the no class department, -20 in the lack of honor department.
I'm happy to say though that karma kicked in twice, as the ref did add the lost time onto the clock (go figure), even though the teams were already in extra time, and the US tied the match on an inspiring Abby Wambach header with the clock already over the 120 minute mark. Then the US netted all five of their PKs while US goalkeeper Hope Solo saved her second legitimate PK of the match to knock out Brazil.
Sometimes things work out.

Apache FC: Latest News
Firstly a big thank you to all the players who came out for Apache FC this past first season.
We are already in the planning stages for the next fall/winter season in the LA Municipal League. To the players, let us know if you are interested in playing again in September and whether you prefer Tuesday or Thursday nights. An informal poll thus far seems to sway toward Tuesday nights.
Priority registration for the next season runs July 11 to 14, with open registration starting July 18. So we will be taking player deposits soon. The official managers meeting will be held in mid-August with matches set to start in either late August or early September. The fall/winter season is longer than our just completed Spring season, and will include an over-30s cross league Cup competition, which spans teams on Tuesday and Thursday night divisions.
In other news, Coach Billy Alarcon is already hard at work getting us some pre-season friendlies for August on the Griffith Park turf field (details to be announced soon).
We will also be holding some practices between now and September, and will be recruiting a few more players to fill in gaps.
For now have a safe July 4 weekend and stay fit.

APACHE FC BOWS OUT IN PLAYOFFS
June 29, 2011: Despite outplaying their opponents for a majority of the game, the Warriors dropped a disappointing 1-0 loss during quarterfinals action at John Ferraro to Los Andes after failing to overcome a first-half goal against the run of play.
While Apache FC generated numerous chances throughout the 90, posts, crossbars and an incredibly lucky Los Andes keeper kept the home side off the scoring sheet. Warriors Keeper Carlos Guerrero also was forced to make few spectacular saves as the clock ticked down and the Warriors were pushing up for the tying goal.
Ironically all four quarterfinal matches were decided by a goal with blue division's Hollywood United knocking off Dinamo Lokomotiv 4-3, and in the Red Division ... Martin Fierro (2) vs GOALFELLAS (1), FC Armenia Deportivo (6) vs Silverlagos (5).
The squad thanks its sponsor Apache Rentals and coach Billy Alarcon for bring the team through its first season with an impressive second-place finish and a regular season record of 8 wins, 1 tie and 3 losses.
The team now looks to the fall/winter season, with matches resuming in September.

A Thank-You Letter to Blake's Family
Note: this was sent to the family with a Blake's 6 jersey on June 22
Dear Whalen and Allison, Jackson, Lauren and Ansley
The staff and players of Apache FC just wanted to write to thank you for the honor of playing in your son/brother Blake’s name during this year’s Kick for a Cure Tournament in San Diego, June 18 and 19.
While the squad did not advance to the playoffs in the men’s competitive division, we played on the field during the three-game opening round with a passion, honor and spirit befitting the memory of Blake.
While the squad did not advance to the playoffs in the men’s competitive division, we played on the field during the three-game opening round with a passion, honor and spirit befitting the memory of Blake.
All players wore a special Apache FC purple jersey throughout the tourney, which included a newly designed logo for Blake. The team would like to present you with the #6 jersey (for Blake’s 6) to make you and your family honorary members of Blake’s 6 and Apache FC.
As a club formed around a passion for soccer and life, Apache FC always looks for ways to give back to the community and this honor gave us the opportunity to make a difference off the field in the real world. Participating in Duchenne San Diego's Kick for a Cure 6 v 6 Tournament annually has always been close to coach Billy Alarcon’s heart … supporting an incredible and worthwhile cause – Children with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy – by simply participating in a game we all love. Allowing us to play in Blake’s name elevated those efforts in a manner special to all of our hearts.
Blake was loved by all and the memory of his sweet and gentle spirit will never fade from the hearts of those who know and love him. While we personally did not get to meet him, all of us feel touched by his memory. Thank you for that.

APACHE FC THANKS TOURNEY SPONSORS/ORGANIZERS
Apache FC thanks Kick for the Cure organizers for the opportunity to compete in this year's tourney, with one special squad being given the honor of playing for 14-year-old Blake Kuller, who passed away August 9, 2010 after leading an inspiring life with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.
Blake's 6 played in special purple jerseys (Blake's favorite color) with a logo designed for the event, to honor both Blake and his incredible family. (read more) One of the jerseys is being given to Blake's mother following the tourney.
While results on the field did not see either Blake's 6 or Apache FC advance past the opening three-game round, both teams played with spirit and honor, especially in the match which saw Blake's 6 and Apache FC square off against one another.

APACHE FC NEEDS QUICK START IN PLAYOFFS
If the Warriors are to see success in their first Cup Round match-up against Los Andes next Tuesday, they will have to get out of the starting gate much faster than demonstrated in this week's final season game against Hollywood United -- a disappointing 5-0 loss.
The first 12 minutes saw Apache FC drop four goals, including an unnecessary PK, before the team got organized. Granted the squad was again missing a handful of starters, forcing several players to be put in unfamiliar positions ... and the field was crap, as usual ... but the Warriors did manage to generate some offense once the squad settled. It was the time it took to settle that put the team behind the 8-Ball.
But looking back on the Warrior's first season ever, a lot of positives were achieved.
1) the squad finished in second place in the regular season standings with a record of 8-1-3 (25 points) and qualified easily for the Cup Tournament
2) Nick Midulla captured the team's first Golden Boot award with 10 goals on the season
3) Keeper Carlos Guerrero recorded five shutouts and a Goals Against Average of 1.18 over 11 matches
4) Whatever the score, the Warriors never gave up until the final whistle, an attitude which did see the squad come back from early deficits to win games.
Apache play third-place Los Andes in the Cup quarterfinals, June 28 at John Ferraro (7 PM start) with the winner facing the top seed first round winner from the Tuesday Red Division in semi-final action July 5 at Griffith Park. The Cup finals are set for July 12 at Griffith Park (7:30 PM start).

Apache FC seals second place with eighth win
On the strength of a hat trick by striker Mike Lewis, and keeper Carlos Guerrero's fifth shutout of the season, Apache FC sealed up second place in the LA Municipal League Over-30s (Tuesday Blue Division), with a 4-0 win over United Football Club Tuesday night at Griffith Park.
Despite playing the lowest team in the division, the Warriors eighth win did not come easily at first. While they dominated play for much of the match, Apache were on their heels for the first five minutes, even giving up an indirect free kick right outside the box just minutes in. But when the squad finally settled into their passing game and started to generate chances, a goal did come, with lead scorer Nick Midulla boosting his season's tally to 10 at the 22-minute mark.
From that point Apache ran the field, with only a copious amount of questionable offside calls from the sideline official stopping the team from recording more goals before the halftime whistle. On the defensive side, the return of Ger McManus and Sammy Xaylitdet kept United FA stalled in midfield.
The second half saw more of the same, with the Warriors racking up some inexplicable offside calls (yes ... the play is supposed to be called based on when the ball is struck). But Apache overcame the odds with Mike Lewis netting three goals in just under three minutes around the 80-minute mark.
The 4-0 win leaves Apache with a respectable 25 points on the season with one game remaining. The Warriors will play division leaders Hollywood United a third time June 21 at John Ferraro with a 7 PM kickoff, having split their first two meetings with a win a piece (3-1, 0-1).
Then Apache will play Los Andes in the Cup quarterfinals, June 28 at John Ferraro (7 PM start) with the winner facing the top seed first round winner from the Tuesday Red Division in semi-final action July 5 at Griffith Park. The Cup finals are set for July 12 at Griffith Park (7:30 PM start).
UPDATE:
With Hollywood United taking their 10th win last night, 4-0 over Santiagueno, they have now won the Tuesday Over-30s Blue Division. Apache FC finishes second and Los Andes third ... no matter what the results in the regular season's final matches next week. Only the fourth and final playoff spot is up for grabs with Dinamo Lokomotiv only a point above the fifth-place Santiagueno. Both squads lost their matches this week, and will rely on next week's results to determine fourth-place, which will play Hollywood United in the quarterfinals.

Warriors take revenge on Los Andes with 4-1 win
Apache FC improved its record to 7-1-2 and gained a measure of revenge over upper-table rivals Los Andes with a convincing 4-1 win at the Griffith Park turf field last night, keeping the Warriors in a solid second place with just two regular season matches to go.
The game, a likely match-up for the upcoming Cup quarterfinals, saw Apache pushed back on its heels for the first five minutes as the makeshift squad settled into unfamiliar positions, especially in midfield. The squad were missing no less than eight players.
But the defense and backup keeper Desmond Gallagher -- stepping in for a traveling Carlos Guerrero -- held Los Andes at bay and off the score sheet, allowing the team to settle into its passing game. An early strike from forward Nick Midulla also changed the complexion of the match ... and gave the Warriors some confidence. Midulla added a second cracker off a shot from the side of the Los Andes net about five minutes later (bringing him up to a season total of nine goals), and Ivan Miller also capitalized before the halftime whistle after making a run for the ball to the back line before directing a shot across the face of the goal and past the Los Andes keeper.
Halftime also saw the arrival of the Warriors only sub for the game, with Guillermo Herrera returning to action after missing a pair of games due to injury.
Apache continued to make runs early in the second half, but saw the team dropping a goal off a free kick outside the box about 15 minutes in. Gallagher, who filled Guerrero's shoes nicely -- and was awarded MVP of the match, was also forced to make a diving save off an errant and bouncing back pass from the mid-field.
The Warriors thought they sealed the match with about 20 minutes to go after a striker was taken down in the box and Richie Million converted the PK. But Million later received his second Yellow Card of the game for a take down in the Apache defensive zone ... and the Warriors were forced to play a man down for the remainder of the game. Strong defense and a great cross passing game though allowed Apache to keep control.
The three points give Apache a solid grasp on second place, five points above Los Andes. Next week the Warriors face bottom dwellers United FA for the third time this season (Griffith Park | June 14, 8:50 PM kickoff). And the regular season ends June 21 with a third crack at Hollywood United, who currently lead the tables.
Special thanks to David "Puma" Alarcon for stepping into coach Billy Alarcon's shoes for the game, and to all the Warriors fans who showed up to cheer the team on.

Apache take sixth win
Apache FC came back from an early 2-0 deficit to earn its sixth victory of the season, in a hard-fought and sometimes dirty 5-3 result over Santiagueno.
Back on the dreaded John Ferraro fields, the Warriors dominated play early in the first half but saw two goals go in at the 19' and 23' mark off defensive lapses.
However, Apache struck back quickly, with Nick Midulla slotting one past the keeper on 25 minutes, and a newly returned Richie Million adding to the tally three minutes later, leaving the squads tied at 2-2 at the half.
The scrappy game left several players with the results of elbows to the face, and one Santiagueno player was ejected for a clear punch to midfielder Mike Barthel.
But the Warriors took things in stride, with Midulla adding his second in the game early in the second half -- bringing his season tally up to seven. And Richard "Trix" Taylor notched a brace to round out the scoring, his goals bookending a questionable penalty kick call on 80 minutes which keeper Carlos Guerrero came close to saving. Guerrero and Midulla were named game MVPs..
Apache still sit in second overall with 19 points, five behind leaders Hollywood United and two above Los Andes, who the Warriors play this coming Tuesday. The team is now guaranteed second or third spot based on the current standing. But Hollywood United will have to drop points for Apache to make a run on the top spot.

Congrats to Apache FCer
Apache FCer Richie Million was part of the winning side -- Doxa Italia -- which knocked off the DV8 Defenders 4-1 in a penalty kick shootout last week to take the USASA Region IV championship and earn a sponsored trip to the National Cup later this summer.
With both teams coming off celebrations the day before at qualifying for the U.S. Open Cup, the match took some time to really get moving, but by the extra time period it was moving at a brisk pace. The penalty kick shootout fell in favor of Doxa, as two DV8 players missed the target to hand the championship to the Southern California side.

Apache gets back to winning ways
Despite a slow start against bottom-dwellers United Football Academy, Apache FC bounced back to scoring form with a welcome 8-0 win Tuesday night at Griffith Park.
Sporting two new additions -- central midfielder Esteban Zelaya and striker Richard "Trix" Taylor -- who were signed right on the May 19 LA Municipal League deadline, the Warriors dominated the first half with smart passing and strong offensive runs, but again had some finishing issues.
It wasn't until more than 40 minutes in when Taylor stepped onto the field for the first time in an Apache FC uniform, that the squad finally put one away, ironically on Taylor's first touch of the ball. Taylor took a through pass from Nick Midulla and slotted it past the United keeper.
The second half saw the arrival of coach Billy Alarcon, whose brother David "Puma" Alarcon filled in for during the first half. Play was again dominated by the Warriors, who finally saw more scoring success --- in droves -- at the 70-minute mark, when Midulla spun through several defenders before striking the ball home.
That seemed to tear the bandage off as the Warriors then scored six unanswered goals in just over six minutes ... Mike Barthel's two bullet shots outside the box netted him a brace, Taylor added another two goals for a hat trick, and Zelaya and Desmond Gallagher added singles ... their first goals of the season. Midulla leads the team in scoring now with five goals, followed closely by Barthel and Taylor with three.
The win also saw the Warriors playing without several key starters ... Alex Martinez, Jimmy Lin and Guillermo Herrera are all on the injury list while Custis Smith, Richie Million, Gerard McManus and Matthew McCallum were away for the match.
"Our two new signings definitely stepped up to the bat," Coach Billy Alarcon said. "Zelaya was a strong and calming influence on play in central midfield throughout the match and Taylor scoring a hat trick in his first appearance ... that definitely seemed to spark the goal scorers on the team."
The Warriors defense also had some stats to be proud of, with keeper Carlos Guerrero recording his fourth shutout over eight games, and the back four -- Bryan Moore, Desmond Gallagher, Sammy Xaylitdet and Rahoul Ghose -- reducing their goals against average to .625 ... or only five goals over eight matches.
Apache FC, who remain in a strong second-place position behind Hollywood United, are back at John Ferraro 7 next week for a return match against Santiagueño with a later 8:50 PM start. The team won their first encounter 3-1. Then the Warriors will play a pair at Griffith Park -- against Los Andes and United FA -- before finishing the season off at JF6 with a third meeting against Hollywood United.
The top four teams in the blue division advance to the Cup round with first playing fourth, and second playing third, in the first round. Winners will then advance to the semis facing teams from the Tuesday night Red division.

APACHE FC STICKS SECOND WITH A SCORELESS TIE
Apache FC held on to second place in the LA Municipal League Tuesday night with a hard-fought scoreless draw against Dinamo Lokamotiv at the ever-worsening John Ferraro fields.
"It says a lot when we hold a team scoreless," Coach Billy Alarcon said following the game. "(Our keeper) Carlos made some great saves as well."
Alarcon added: "The tie was good for us following two straight losses. We could have beat that team and possibly netted one of our many chances. But alone in second place isn't bad seven matches into the season."
On the defensive side, Apache boasts the best Goals Against record (.71) with only five goals so far this season ... Hollywood United has eight goals against.
The squad was in fact helped by the division leaders -- Hollywood United -- who knocked off third-place Los Andes 2-1.
The Warriors remained composed throughout their match from the back, forward, with strong performances from keeper Carlos Guerrero, the back four, and midfielders Guillermo Herrera, Ivan Miller and Custis Smith. Central midfielder Alex Martinez was unfortunately sidelined following a rough challenge midway through the first half which left him with possible ligament damage in his knee.
And the squad were also missing Richie Million, Matthew McCallum, Sammy Xaylitdet, Ger McManus and Mike Lewis from the lineup. But Apache forwards Mike Barthel and Nick Midulla did generate numerous chances on goal throughout the match. The entire squad fought for the winner until the final whistle. But that last final touch, and possibly a bit of luck, eluded the team on the night.
The Warriors next see action May 24 against United FA at Griffith Park with a 7 PM kickoff. Three of the team's final five regular season matches are thankfully on turf.

Kick for the Cure teams announced
Hey lads. Here is your official roster for the Kick for a Cure tournament in June. Myself, Rahoul and Mike B will be heading down Friday afternoon, the 17th. We have a small tradition of having an early dinner at a Mexican restaurant, then going to register, followed by a team movie outing. This year's movie will be 'The Hangover 2'. Of course you are ALL welcome to join. I hope you all do!!
As you know we are taking two teams down. Two teams that we consider "A" teams. We are going down to win TWO cups, not one. We take this very seriously. My brother, David, aka Puma will be coaching one squad, while I will oversee the other.
Now the Blake's 6 squad will be a little different. We will be re-naming that squad 'Blake's 6'. Blake was a 13-year-old kid who had the disease this tournament was started to to help fight. Unfortunately, he passed away late last year. We have adopted his name and will be playing in his honor. And it is an honor. His Mom and family, who live in Georgia, could not be more excited about us playing for Blake. His favorite color was purple but was always too shy to wear it because he thought he might be looked at as girly. So the men that we are, we will be wearing a special purple jersey, designed by Rahoul. We'll wear our regular shorts and socks.
This will also have the special logo Rahoul created for our new team name. You can read a full write up on our home page about Blake. The shirt was made by our friends at Niky's sports, and in return for sporting their logo on the sleeve, they have agreed to give us the shirts at cost. 7 bucks. The shirt will be yours to purchase and be a cool memento to keep after the tourney is done.
The squads are as follows.
Blake's 6
Carlos Guerrero
Bryan Moore
Rahoul Ghose
Desmond Gallagher
Nick Midulla
Mike Lewis
Alex Martinez
Sammy Xaylitdet
Juan Salinaszelaya
Jimmy Lin
Apache FC Warriors
Steven Rullie
Custis Smith
Mike Barthel
Jeff Pederson
Ivan Miller
Sean Davies
Guillermo Herrera
Milton

Our first practice will be THIS THURSDAY NIGHT MAY 12TH 8PM AT OUR SOL DEL VALLE COMMUNITY CENTER TRAINING FACILITY. Cost is 5 bucks per player. ALSO, WE WILL BE PRACTICING ON AN "INDOOR" CONCRETE COURT. This will totally benefit us in practicing the 6 v 6 format as well as with small goals. So bring your indoor boots or samba type shoes to this practice.

APACHE FC DROPS TO SECOND PLACE
Apache FC fell to second place in the LA Municipal League Tuesday night following a frustrating 1-0 loss to Hollywood United.
Both the Warriors and United started the match undermanned, but it was HU which took the only goal on the night off a free kick outside the box midway through the first half, with the shot deflecting off a defender into the net.
Continuous pressure and numerous chances on goal throughout the remaining 60 minutes would not yield a tying marker for the Warriors, who hit the post and upright at least four times. One shot off the inside post also appeared to be in, but was ruled "no goal" by the referee.
Coach Billy Alarcon chose to see the positive in the match, however, noting the Warriors never gave up right to the final whistle.
"We have some incredible individual talents on this side and still need some time to see those talents gel together," Alarcon said. "It's just going to take time and practice for our players to calm down on the field and start to trust one another ... rushing the ball on fields of John Ferraro's quality just does not work."
Alarcon added: "Second place mid-way through the season ... in our first season ... is still very encouraging."
The Warriors next see action May 17 against Dinamo Lokamotiv at John Ferraro 7 with an 8:50 PM kickoff.

Barca's Off Ball Movement
Here's some field positioning points from some of the best.
APACHE FC DROPS FIRST LOSS OF SEASON
Apache FC dropped its first loss in LA Municipal League over-30s action Tuesday night, falling 2-0 to a scrappy Los Andes side.
The Warriors started well, dominating the first 10 to 15 minutes, but failed to get on the scoreboard. Los Andes then settled in and started its counterattack, forcing keeper Carlos Guerrero to make several key saves, including a sprawling block on a breakaway.
Los Andes kept raising their tempo and finally put one in off a corner kick at the 38-minute mark, which defenders couldn't clear.
The Warriors battled back in the second half often bottling Los Andes up in their final 30, but were stymied by several saves and a cluttered defensive area. Mike Barthel almost tied the match off a free kick outside the box -- which was dipping under the bar -- but the Los Andes keeper tipped it over for a corner.
Los Andes doubled their tally with about five minutes left, against the run of play, with a chip off a rebound.
Coach Billy Alarcon admitted the team had issues with the field conditions, but also noted that Los Andes played under the same conditions.
"They were just better than us tonight," Alarcon said, adding that Apache FC is still a brand new squad which had some growing to do.
The Warriors next see action May 10 against Hollywood United at John Ferraro 6 with a 7 PM kickoff. The Warriors won their first encounter against United 3-1, so the rematch should prove to be spirited.

Warriors set for last first round match
Apache FC will play their last match of first round LA Muni League play Tuesday night at John Ferraro, facing an improved Los Andes side.
Since defaulting in their first game against Santiagueno, Los Andes has racked up wins against Dinamo Lokomotiv and United FA, and suffered a 2-1 loss to current second-place side Hollywood United.
Apache hopes to improve its record to 5-0, adding to wins against Hollywood United, Santiagueno, United FA and Dinamo Lokomotiv this season, thus far.

A Rockers' Night Out
From: Nick Midulla
Rock on!
Hey Warriors,
FYI, I have a show this Saturday night (April 30) at the Kibitz Room which is located on Fairfax next to Canters Deli, between Melrose and 3rd St. (419 N Fairfax Ave).
My band is The Real Deal and we do Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan ... classic hurricane blues and psychedelic acid rock from the late 60s. It's a special show 'cause we are playing a two-hour set, which is rare.

Apache jumps to 4-0 record with 3-1 Santiagueno win
Apache FC notched its fourth straight win Tuesday night with a hard-fought and often chippy 3-1 win over Santiagueno.
Following a week off due to the Passover holiday, and three straight wins, the Warriors faced second-place Santiagueno, as well as the rough, uneven grass of John Ferraro.
Playing into the sunset for the first 10 minutes also seemed a bit daunting -- if not outright blinding. But striker Richie Million immediately put his mark on the game, taking a chip into the box by defender Rahoul Ghose and twisting past several players before slotting the ball past the keeper within the first two minutes.
After several more goal opportunities, Santiagueno struck back off a cross to make it 1-1 midway through the first. But striker Nick Midulla notched one of two goals on the night just before the half-time whistle, knocking a bouncing shot between the keeper's legs.
"We had problems adjusting to the conditions of the pitch as well as the physical, sometimes too aggressive play of our opponents. But we settled in and kept our composure ... and I felt like we made some adjustments and played at our level," coach Billy Alarcon said.
The second half saw the Warriors take more control of the game, with the defense and midfield stepping up more to block passing channels. Frustrations saw both teams receiving a bevy of yellow cards. But despite a series of free kicks awarded outside the Apache FC box, it was the home side who netted the final tally, with Midulla taking an outside pass from Mike Lewis and curving a brilliant cross goal shot past the keeper into the top lefthand side of the goal. Midulla now leads the scoring tables with four goals on the season.
The win leaves Apache FC in top spot with 12 points. Results from the other two matches were Hollywood United (14) vs Dinamo Lokomtiv (1) and United FA (0) vs Los Andes (4), leaving the Warriors with a three-point cushion over the now second-place Hollywood.
The Warriors next see action May 3 against Los Andes at John Ferraro 7 with an 8:50 PM kickoff. Then the rotation starts from the top again with Apache FC facing off against Hollywood United for the second time this season on May 10.

Apache FC takes third win, knocks off United FA 3-0
Apache FC took out United Football Academy 3-0 in LA Municipal League over-30s action Tuesday night at Griffith Park to earn the squad's third straight win.
Striker Nick Midulla notched the first tally of the night off a header from a Mike Lewis cross barely 10 minutes in, his second goal of the early season. And Mike Barthel added a second goal about 15 minutes later with a cracking shot from outside the box which blew past the UFA keeper, leaving the match 2-0 at the half.
Solid defence and an attacking midfield generated numerous Apache chances and held UFA to just a couple shots on goal.
"The squad was passing well and looked calm for most of the match," Coach Billy Alarcon commented. "We now hope to work on some skills training in practice to convert more of our chances in the box."
Alarcon added while Apache FC has already demonstrated depth in its lineup, both starters and on the sidelines, the Warriors are only going to get stronger as the season progresses.
"All of our players are starter quality."
The second half started a bit messy in terms of ball control, with United trying to strike back with a goal of their own. But Lewis quashed any last minute spirit from the side, converting a pass from Midulla with Giggs-like precision to make it 3-0.
Keeper Carlos Guerrero was named MVP of the match for earning his second straight shutout.
The win leaves the Warriors in first place going into the Easter break, three points up on Santiagueno and Hollywood United. United knocked off Santiagueno 3-2, while Los Andes blasted Dinamo Lokamotiv 5-0 in other blue division match-ups.
The squad next faces Santiagueno Tuesday, April 26 at John Ferraro #7 with a 7 PM kickoff.

APACHE FC FIRE EARNS SECOND WIN
Apache FC rolled on to its second win of the LA Municipal League over-30s season with a tight 1-0 win over Dinamo Lokamotiv Tuesday night at Griffith Park
A solid defence led by sweeper Ger McManus -- who was named MVP of the match -- kept Dinamo at bay for a majority of the match ... limiting them to just a few set plays over the 90.
The Warriors racked up numerous chances in both the first and second half -- with several shots turned away by the Dinamo keeper ... but the squad's lone tally didn't tweak the twine until five minutes before the final whistle sounded.
Still playing for the win, striker Mike Lewis was taken down outside the Dinamo box while making a run on goal with the ball. Midfielder Alex Martinez sent the ensuing free kick curing across the box, where a sprawling Matty McCallum converted it into the net.
"We never stopped playing until the end," Coach Billy Alarcon said following the match. "Dinamo appeared to be satisfied with a tie as the match wore on ... but we never gave up on the win."
Keeper Carlos Guerrero maintained Apache's first shutout after making an incredible diving save to tip the ball over the crossbar on Dinamo's final chance of the match off a corner kick.
The result gives Apache a clean six points over two matches. The squad next faces United Football Academy Tuesday, April 12 at Griffith Park with an 8:50 PM kickoff.

Apache FC takes on Dinamo Lokamotiv Tuesday
Apache FC hits Griffith Park for its second game of the LA Municipal Soccer League Season with a early 7 PM match against Dinamo Lokamotiv.
The turf pitch should make for a much faster game than last week's home opener against Hollywood United which saw the tall grass at John Ferraro slowing down much of the play. The squad still earned its first win though, 3-1, and sits in second place based on goal differential behind Santiagueno, who earned a 3-0 result from Los Andes for a default. Dinamo lost 3-1 to United Football Academy.
Come out Tuesday night to cheer on Apache FC to a second victory.

Apache FC starts season with important win
Apache FC started its first foray into league play with an impressive 3-1 win over reigning LA Municipal League over-30 champions Hollywood United Tuesday night at John Ferraro.
All 17 players turned out for the game with the starting 11 and six substitutes interchanging seamlessly throughout the match, coach Billy Alarcon said following the win.
"There wasn't a weak spot on the pitch and everyone fought for the entire 90 minutes," Alarcon said. "And we beat Hollywood United in our first game together ... I'm still smiling."
Practicing on a grass field seemed to help the newcomers, who played on an even keel with United for the first 20 minutes, despite some pre-game jitters. A solid defence commanded by sweeper Custis Smith killed most if not all United chances in the early stages, while the Apache FC midfield maintained a strong presence throughout the match with standout performances from Alex Martinez (named Apache MVP of the game), Guillermo Herrera, Matt McCallum and JC Salinaszelaya.
After creating several scoring opportunities, Apache FC opened their goal-scoring account in the final minute of the first half, with mid-fielder Mike Barthel angling a slick corner kick towards the far post and Herrera converting the ball with a well-placed header.
The second half saw continued success with mid-field substitute Ivan Miller coming on to score his first goal following a scramble in the United 18-yard box about 10 minutes in. United had exerted some early half pressure to tie the match, but were again foiled by stopper Ger McManus and timely tackles from a fiery Des Gallagher.
Striker Nick Midulla rounded out the scoring with about 15 minutes left to play, pouncing on a loose ball knocked on by Sammy Xaylidet to make it three, before United finally got on the board with their single tally ... a shot from inside the Apache box which powered by keeper Carlos Guerrero, who was strong between the posts for the entire match.
While the game got physical at times -- with the referee handing out yellow cards to both squads -- overall the match was clean. Apache FC saw the game through to final whistle on a strong note, maintaining a level of control in the midfield.
Apache next see action Tuesday, April 5 at the Griffith Park turf field against Dinamo Lokamotiv with a 7 PM kickoff. Come out and cheer the team on.
Thanks to the fans who attended the Hollywood United match including our own Dan Sapienza and David "Puma" Alarcon, Irmgard Rios, Tara Tortorello ... to name a few.
Apache FC set for inaugural match
It will be baptism by fire for the newly formed and talented Apache FC squad Tuesday night at John Ferraro (8:50 PM kickoff) when the team face off against reigning LA Municipal League champs Hollywood United in their first ever LA Municipal League match.
The squad has now signed 17 players and will look to shore up the lineup with a final five before the May 19 signing deadline. To date the team -- coached by Billy Alarcon -- includes: Mike Barthel (m), Desmond Gallagher (d), Rahoul Ghose (d/m), Carlos Guerrero (g), Guillermo Herrera (m), Doug Koontz (d), Mike Lewis (f), Alex Martinez (m), Matthew McCallum (m), Gerard McManus (m/d), Nick Midulla (f), Ivan Miller (m), Richie Million (f), Bryan Moore (d), Juan Salinaszelaya (f), Custis Smith (d) and Sammy Xaylitdet (m/f).
Also waiting in the wings -- both recovering from knee surgeries -- are star midfielder David "Puma" Alarcon and key striker Dan Sapienza.
The night will also see the squad wearing their kits for the first time in competition. The team has been practicing since November on a grass pitch, and should adapt well to John Ferraro's often dubious grass conditions.
For a complete listing of upcoming games visit the team's website Fixtures page. Apache FC plays Tuesday nights in the over-30s blue division with the likes of Dinamo Lokamotiv, United Football Academy, Santiagueno and Los Andes, as well as Hollywood United.
Apache FC will play a 12-game season meeting all opposition for at least two matches (two squads will be played three times). Then the top four in both the red and blue Tuesday divisions will advance to the Cup round.
Red Division teams include: Goalfellas, Martin Fierro, Beer Celona, FC Armenia Deportivo, Silverlake FC and the Silverlagos.
Apache FC fans are more than welcome (and quite frankly are encouraged) to cheer on the squad Tuesday night.

Full Apache FC schedule available Friday
Attendance at the LA Municipal Soccer League's annual team meeting did not yield the full spring season schedule as anticipated ... we'll have to wait until Friday for that.
However I can tell you that our Tuesday league is comprised of 12 teams broken into two divisions of six ... blue division and red division. Regular season play will see each squad playing every team in their division twice. Following regular season play the top four squads from each division will qualify for a Cup round. Division winners will win a Cup as will the Playoff round winners. Note: only players who have played in a minimum of four league matches qualify to play in the Cup round.
Each team can only have a roster of 22 players, though you can drop and add players up to a certain point in the season to replace injured or AWOL players.
Apache FC has been placed in the blue division ... joined by Hot Spurs SC, Los Andes, Santiagueno, United Football Academy ... and one other squad. Two squads did not attend the meeting so I don't know which will be blue or red division.
Our first match will be against Hot Spurs SC (according to the breakdown we were shown) at John Ferraro #6 with an 8:50 PM kickoff, March 29.
Also discussed at length were the league's rules with regards to the fields, in particular the turf ones.
At Griffith Park there is a strict policy of no food or Gatorade on the field ... water only. Also only players and a coach with ID cards are allowed on the field. No metal cleats, no dogs and no changing of clothes (ie shorts specifically) or relieving oneself outside ... use the restrooms. I'm not preaching ... this is just me passing on the rules as stated to me. Failure to comply could result in action being taken against the team in the form of fines or suspensions.
As to the stands, each team is responsible -- and will be held accountable -- for the behavior of its fans, friends and relatives attending the match.
Each team must have a designated captain, who alone can contest decisions on the field in a respectful manner. Yes ... slide tackling is allowed if done in the appropriate manner ... cleats down and w/o intent to injure.
Finally ... all players must have not only their Cal South ID ... they must also have a secondary ID with a picture on hand (ie DL) if another team wants to contest people's ages. While we have a policy of not signing any under-aged players, bringing your driver's license to games will settle any comments immediately in our favor.
As soon as I get the full schedule later this week I will post it it for everyone.
Cheers
Rahoul

Sapienza returns
A great practice last night was made even better with the return of Dan Sapienza, who showed up to do some training. Twelve months into a 16-month recovery process from knee surgery, Sap appears strong, fit and in good spirits. Hopefully he will be ready to try out that new knee on a soccer ball in four months time.
The team also tested out some new goalie prospects and is primed for the official release of the LA Municipal League schedule this Saturday. Less than three weeks to go before kickoff on March 29.
